ODE TO ONE OF THE GREATEST LEADERS OF THE 20TH CENTURY
The passing of our dear father, Nelson Mandela, came as a shock despite his age and health issues. After all, no matter how old your parents get you never truly accept the possibility of their death. It is always a foreign notion, and when it happens, it is too great a loss to bear. In Mandela’s case we are left with the gift of his work , his love and wisdom which lived in his time and will continue to live, in and out of time.
Below is a performance of one of our favorite Mandela quotes. A performance of a statement he made in his defense, at the trial in Pretoria, on April 20, 1964, before he was sentenced to life in prison.
A performance by Chiwetel Ejiofor
Remembering the essence of Nelson Mandela’s work is only of significance if we can at least understand or live by the ideals he lived and was prepared to die for. This is to understand true leadership, to understand service, to understand education, to value life and most importantly to love and value humanity. His was a struggle driven by love for the advancement of the black African race, but most importantly for justice and human equality.
